Coming soon Jonathan Cawood - Still About Alice
AN EXHIBITION OF ABSTRACT WORK BY JON CAWOOD.
I love abstract art.
When I was young, I would invent stories inspired by a print of Kandinsky’s work. Just like ‘Alice Through the Looking-Glass’ I would enter the painting.
A common question when people first see abstract work is ‘what is it’? I like the idea that you should invent your own meaning, your own story. The work becomes a private, safe space to escape the conflicts of the outside world. This is why I make abstract work.
Aspects that inspire my work come from natural forms, images of the environment seen from above, courtyards, gardens and the landscape. The artists Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Mondrian have been a constant influence. More recently the patterns found in Japanese kimonos have been added to my visual symbols. In my collage and drawing work I include maps, photographs and computer manipulated images. My paintings, often called 'courtyard paintings', frequently explore the idea of a peaceful space in a paradise garden. I also see the landscape as the big garden.
Kandinsky wrote ‘each genuine new work of art expresses a new world’. I find this a motivating reason to produce abstract paintings and create new worlds.
Jon Cawood.
